Book review: Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy by Calvin Banyan and Gerald Kein
I chose this book to review because it is another of the books that changed the way that I do Hypnotherapy. The subtitle is Basic to Advanced Techniques for the Professional. I believe that the subtitle describes the book perfectly.
Explaining NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programing)
Basucally Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the process of replacing negative implants in our subconscious mind with more positive imprints. As human beings we all constantly have thoughts that effect our feelings and behavior. If these thoughts are negative, we will experience depression, anxiety, fear, frustration or other negaitive emotions. Then the combination of our thoughts and our emotions create our behavior. If we want to change our emotions or behavior, we need to go back and change our thoughts. We call these thoughts “self-talk”.
Hypnosis and Childbirth
A lot of people consider this to be a fairly new use of hypnosis but I believe that hypnosis has been a part of childbirth since women have been having children. I believe that some mid-wives have been pracitcing this process since time began More women are once again becoming aware that hypnosis is a safe and a more comfortable way to bring their children into the world. This can be done without anesthesia, and drugs and little or no discomfort.
NLP & Establishing Rapport
One of the most powerful techniques of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is matching. This is a very powerful rapport building exercise. Basically, this means copying someones actions or attitude. If they nod their head, a moment later you nod your head. If they stand in a particular posture, you adopt that posture. It is important they they do not realize that they are copying their behavior but that the process of matching seems natural.
Tom Nicoli
Tom Nicoli is a nationally known hypnotist. He is mostly known for his weight loss work but he does offer many other programs. He was on Dateline NBC and was successful in facilitating weight loss on “The Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge.” This was a test of several different weight loss programs to see which may be most effective. Mr. Nicoli’s patient lost 40 pounds during the course of the challenge..
