Am I Helpless When I’m Hypnotized?

- Image via Wikipedia
Most people don’t understand that when they are hypnotized that they can not be made to do anything that would be against their moral code. If, on the other hand, if some type of inappropriate behavior is part of their lifestyle, they would probably perform this same behavior while in hypnosis.
Some people believe that it may be possible to trick someone into doing something that might be against their moral code. For instance, it may be against someone’s moral code to steal but if they could be convinced under hypnosis that something rightfully belonged to them, they might actually steal that item. This is not something new. History is full of people who were convinced that some behavior was correct when looking at if from a different perspective we think that it is obvious that it is not. They didn’t need a hypnotist to make an innappropriate decision.
This would only be conjecture because it would be unethical for me to experiment with someone in my office and I can only have discussions with other therapists about the possibility of tricking someone into doing something against their moral code and I would not want to find out. I personally believe that people are not helpless and I do not think that people can be tricked that easily.
I do believe that it is my duty as a therapist to help people see thngs from another perspective and in some ways to help thin look at the past in a different manner. In that respect, I believe it is the therapist’s job to help people change their past or at least their perspective of the past. One way that hypnostherapists do this is by age regression and any one of several interventions that change the way people look at the past.
But I still believe that the patient is in control because they choose to participate in the intervention and they agree to look at the past in a different way.
