Explaining NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programing)
Basucally Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the process of replacing negative implants in our subconscious mind with more positive imprints. As human beings we all constantly have thoughts that effect our feelings and behavior. If these thoughts are negative, we will experience depression, anxiety, fear, frustration or other negaitive emotions. Then the combination of our thoughts and our emotions create our behavior. If we want to change our emotions or behavior, we need to go back and change our thoughts. We call these thoughts “self-talk”.
Most of us in the helping professions use some form of NLP in our work with clients. We often discuss self-talk with our clients and instruct them to make a conscious effort to phrase their self-talk in a more positive manner. The faster they can learn to use this positive self-talk, the sooner they begin to notice progress in thier efforts to overcome their problems. In order to make any permanant change on one’s behavior, the subconscious mind has to be totally convinced that the change is in one’s best interest and the patient has to want to make the changes.
Positive self-talk makes it possible to do those things in life that we desire. Some of us seem to have developed this habit at an early age. Others learn to adapt positive self-talk as they learn life’s lessons. Sadly, some people never seem to be able to learn the lessons.
Learning positive self-talk is the purpose of most of the self-help books and activities along with a lot of professional help. We are trying to convince our conscious mind to transfer the positive into the subconscious to replace the negative implants from our past.
NLP provides a variety of interventions designed to implant this postive self-talk into the succonsciuos mind. Once it begins to take root, lives begin to change to match the positve goals.
