I was thinking about the average new client that comes into my office. Usually, they have tried several (or many) other solutions to their particular problem. Many times hypnosis is a last resort. As I have discussed in an earlier post, they are sceptical and nervous. But most of all I think that they believe that the hypnotist has some type of occult power that will rid them of whatever issue that they have come to deal with.

The first question people seem to ask is “Is hypnosis effective?” What they really mean is “Does hypnosis work?”  This question actually has a rather complicated answer.  The question should more accurately be “Can I do the work necessary to make changes with the aid of hypnosis?”

Medical Hypnosis

Hypnosis as been around since man first developed cognitive ability.  People have been performing self-hypnosis since they have been able to focus on a subject or daydream. Hypnosis has been recognized by the AMA as a legitimate medical treatment since 1958. Physicians rarely do hypnosis with their patients anymore because they simply don’t have time.  A Medical Doctor would be the ideal person to perform Medical Hypnosis because they have the authority and often see their patients at times of intense emotion.  These are conditions that set the stage for successful hypnotherapy.  The issue is that the cost of doing business for a physician is just to great to invest the time for a hypnosis intervention.

The people who participate in stage hypnosis volunteer for the experience and are aware that they will do things that seem silly or foolish.  I believe that stage hypnosis is responsible for many people’s reluctance to participate in hypnotherapy.

One of the most memorable answers to the question  “What can you do with hypnosis?”  is “What the mind can conceive, hypnosis can achieve”. Naturally, there are some things that people probably will not achieve. I don’t think any of us are going to be able to fly without some type of aid although I have had reports of people levitating while hypnotized  I have never seen this myself so I consider it anecdotal and questionable. The book Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy says that unaided flying is easy. You just throw yourself into the air and try not to hit the ground. I don’t think we will be able to do that. But I do believe that any reasonable goal can be achieved with hypnosis and some goals that many people do not consider reasonable.
